Coach Knight's 'rebuild' surprises with winning streak

The Moreau Catholic Mariners boys basketball team is experiencing a remarkably successful season, defying initial expectations of a rebuild. Coach Frank Knight, in his 16th season, had anticipated a challenging year after losing eight seniors and his top four scorers from the previous championship team. However, the Mariners have achieved 17 victories in their first 20 games, surprising Knight and positioning them for a strong playoff push.

Junior guard Isaiah Clendinen and sophomore center Brendan Williams have been instrumental in the team's success. Clendinen averages 19.3 points per game, while Williams contributes 15.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks. Their strong performances, even in games where the team plays below its best, have been crucial in securing victories, including a recent 70-61 win over Clovis North.

Despite their youth, with several underclassmen in starting roles, the Mariners have demonstrated resilience and composure. They are currently ranked fifth by the Chronicle and fourth in MaxPreps' NCS computer rankings, potentially earning them a spot in the Open Division. Coach Knight, who has a history of success, including a championship at Fremont-Oakland and multiple titles with Moreau Catholic, considers this current season his best. The team is focused on a state championship, believing their potential is limitless if they play cohesively and hard.
