MLS Seeks New Leader as Garber Contract Nears End

Major League Soccer (MLS) has engaged the executive search firm Korn Ferry to spearhead the recruitment process for a new league commissioner. This strategic move is in preparation for the potential departure of current commissioner Don Garber, whose contract is scheduled to conclude at the end of 2027. This decision is a component of a comprehensive organizational review aimed at assessing leadership, operational efficiency, and long-term governance.

The succession planning occurs during a pivotal time for MLS. The league is anticipating a surge in interest driven by the upcoming World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Additionally, the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the MLS Players Association and the league's media rights deal with Apple are both set to expire in 2027 and 2029, respectively.

Garber, who has held the commissioner role since 1999, will be 70 years old when his current contract ends. While he has not definitively decided whether to step down at that precise moment, he may continue through at least the conclusion of the 2027-28 season. A Succession Committee, composed of club owners and co-chaired by Bennett Rosenthal and Jimmy Haslam, has been formed to guide this process.
