Superstar Kaprizov Rejects Record-Breaking $128M Contract with Minnesota Wild
10 Sep
Summary
- Kirill Kaprizov, Minnesota Wild's superstar, turned down an 8-year, $128M contract offer
- The proposed deal would have been the largest in NHL history in terms of AAV and total dollars
- Kaprizov is entering the final year of a 5-year, $45M contract and can become a UFA next July

According to a report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, Minnesota Wild superstar Kirill Kaprizov has turned down the team's offer of an 8-year, $128 million contract extension. This proposed deal would have been the largest in NHL history, both in terms of average annual value (AAV) at $16 million and total dollars, surpassing Alex Ovechkin's 13-year, $124 million contract signed in 2008.
The Wild's president of hockey operations and general manager, Bill Guerin, declined to comment on the report, and also would not speculate on whether Kaprizov's rejection could mean he won't sign an extension at all or if he is simply looking to negotiate a shorter-term deal. Kaprizov, who is entering the final year of a 5-year, $45 million contract, can become an unrestricted free agent next July 1.
If Kaprizov ultimately decides he does not want to stay in Minnesota, it would be a significant blow to the franchise. The 3-time 40-goal scorer is the centerpiece of the Wild's long-term plans, and his departure would leave a massive void in the team's roster and future outlook.
