No. 17 Michigan State achieved their second significant non-conference victory by defeating No. 12 Kentucky 83-66 in New York. This win follows an earlier triumph over No. 14 Arkansas. Despite the team's success, a potential letdown looms as they prepare to host Detroit Mercy. Coach Tom Izzo emphasized the team's unselfishness, noting 25 assists on 32 baskets against Kentucky, and praised the performance of players like Kur Teng, who scored 15 points in an expanded role.
The Spartans' core group of Jaxon Kohler, Carson Cooper, Coen Carr, and Jeremy Fears Jr. has been instrumental, bolstered by transfers Trey Fort and Divine Ugochukwu, and freshmen Jordan Scott and Cam Ward. Sophomore Kur Teng, who saw limited play last year, emerged as a key contributor against Kentucky, scoring 15 points and making three 3-pointers.
Michigan State now shifts focus to Detroit Mercy, coached by former Spartan Mark Montgomery. Detroit Mercy, with a 1-4 record, is led by senior guard Orlando Lovejoy but is integrating many new players. Montgomery acknowledged the team's youth and the ongoing process of developing a consistent rotation and preparing for league play.
