Michael Rucker, a native of Auburn, Washington, has rejoined an MLB roster for the first time since 2023. The Seattle Mariners announced his call-up on Thursday, bringing the former BYU pitcher back to his hometown team. This move also highlights a significant season for players from Brigham Young University.
Rucker is now one of three BYU alumni currently playing in Major League Baseball, alongside Daniel Schneemann of the Cleveland Guardians and Justin Sterner of the Athletics. Their presence ensures that at least three players from BYU have appeared in MLB games in a single season for the first time since 2017.
During his previous MLB tenure with the Chicago Cubs from 2021 to 2023, Rucker recorded a 5-2 win-loss record, a 4.96 ERA, and 120 strikeouts over 96 appearances. His most successful campaign was in 2022, where he achieved a 3.95 ERA. Prior to his recent call-up, Rucker demonstrated strong form in Triple-A, posting a 1.59 ERA through 22 2/3 innings this season. His collegiate career at BYU was also impressive, with a 16-2 record and 2.92 ERA over 39 games.
