Ronny Mauricio Called Up as Mets Face Calf Concerns
23 Apr
Summary
- Shortstop Francisco Lindor sidelined with left calf tightness.
- Infielder Ronny Mauricio promoted from Triple-A Syracuse.
- Mauricio showed impressive power in recent minor league games.

The New York Mets have recalled infielder Ronny Mauricio from Triple-A Syracuse. This move comes shortly after their Wednesday victory, which ended a 12-game losing streak, was overshadowed by an injury to starting shortstop Francisco Lindor. Lindor exited the game with what the team described as left calf tightness and is scheduled for an MRI.
Mauricio, 25, has had a brief stint with the major league club this season. He was initially called up in early April due to a similar calf injury sustained by Juan Soto, but was sent back down after eight days. Notably, Mauricio delivered a walk-off single in his first plate appearance of the year on April 7, marking the Mets' most recent win until Wednesday's game.
Even without Lindor's injury, Mauricio's strong performance in Syracuse made his return to the major leagues seem imminent. Between April 17 and April 21, he batted .533, collecting eight hits in 15 at-bats, including five home runs. This impressive display of power suggests he is ready for another opportunity at the big league level.
The timing of Mauricio's call-up is particularly interesting. Players typically require a 10-day waiting period before being recalled after being optioned. However, Mauricio's promotion before this period concluded indicates a potential roster move, possibly placing Lindor on the injured list. Mauricio offers flexibility, able to play second or third base in addition to shortstop, but spelling Lindor appears to be his most immediate role.
