Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of the most iconic footballers in history, have been at the center of one of the greatest individual sporting rivalries over the past decade and a half. The Argentine and Portuguese superstars have been widely regarded as two of the best players to ever grace the game, setting unbelievable records and winning numerous accolades.
Messi, who has played for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, has amassed an astonishing 874 goals and 388 assists in 1,116 appearances for club and country. Ronaldo, on the other hand, has represented Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Juventus, racking up 938 goals and 257 assists in 1,281 career appearances.
The pair have dominated the prestigious Ballon d'Or award, winning 13 out of the 14 titles awarded between 2008 and 2021. Despite their fierce rivalry, Messi and Ronaldo have showcased incredible respect for each other both on and off the field. It was not until 2018 that they finally voted for one another at an award ceremony, with Messi giving Ronaldo a third-place ranking in his vote for The Best Men's Player. Ronaldo returned the favor two years later, ranking the Argentine second in his vote for the 2020 edition of the award.
As they near the twilight of their careers, Messi and Ronaldo continue to assert their dominance, with the former playing for Inter Miami in MLS and the latter representing Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. However, it is highly unlikely that either of them will add to their Ballon d'Or tally before they hang up their boots.
