Mercedes' Secret Codes Aided Antonelli's Surprise Win

Mercedes has employed secret coded messages to prepare drivers for potential safety car situations, a strategy that proved pivotal in Kimi Antonelli's recent Spanish Grand Prix victory. Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes' trackside engineering director, explained that these codes are changed weekly to prevent rival teams from deciphering them.

During the race, Antonelli was alerted to yellow flags and subsequently slowed significantly, anticipating a Virtual Safety Car (VSC). This deliberate action provided him with an extra second, which Shovlin noted was crucial for enabling a timely pit entry.

The rapid pit stop was a masterclass in team coordination. Mercedes executed a double-stack pit stop for both Antonelli and George Russell, with mechanics preparing tires just as the drivers arrived, showcasing the team's readiness to react swiftly to unfolding race events.
