Medieval Combat: Swords Clash in Danish Fortress

Modern-day knights are battling with swords, axes, and shields at the International Medieval Combat Federation's annual world championship, taking place this week in northern Denmark. Competitors from 30 countries have converged at the historic Spøttrup Castle grounds for this unique event, which began in 2014.

The sport is a dynamic fusion of historical inspiration and modern combat techniques, described as being between full combat sports and fencing. Fighters utilize 14th-century weaponry, but with blunted edges and strict safety regulations, including thick, shock-absorbing padding beneath their armor. Marshals oversee fights, ensuring adherence to rules, and injury rates are reported to be comparable to other full-contact martial arts.

Competitions feature both one-on-one duels, where opponents are eliminated by falling three times or submitting, and larger team events known as 'Buhurt.' The event has attracted individuals drawn by the thrill of combat, the technical challenges of dueling, and the camaraderie of team participation.

This growing sport sees nearly 600 fighters taking part, with significant increases in participation numbers, particularly in the United States and on the women's circuit. Fighters strive for historical accuracy in their armor and techniques, drawing from medieval manuscripts and masters.
