Leonardo Fornaroli, the 2024 Formula 3 and 2025 Formula 2 champion, has been signed by McLaren to race their MCL-HY Hypercar in the 2027 World Endurance Championship. This includes an appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Fornaroli is also McLaren's Formula 1 reserve driver and is one of only five drivers to win the F3 and F2 titles consecutively. McLaren Racing had previously confirmed its intention to enter the 2027 Hypercar class on April 10, 2025, with CEO Zak Brown stating, "We're back."
The MCL-HY race car, revealed on May 4, 2026, is built to LMDh regulations, featuring a twin-turbocharged V6 engine and a hybrid system. McLaren's return to top-class endurance racing was first announced in April 2025. Drivers Laurens Vanthoor and Alex Lynn have also been confirmed for the 2027 season, with Jensen already testing the car since May. Two additional driver spots remain open, and the team plans to homologate the MCL-HY this winter.
