McCoist Urges Barnes: Ditch England for Scotland!

Ally McCoist has expressed strong backing for Scotland manager Steve Clarke's pursuit of Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes. Barnes is eligible to represent Scotland because of his Scottish grandparents. Although he has previously expressed openness to switching allegiances, he has only earned one cap for England in a friendly match, meaning he is still permitted to play for another nation.

Recent reports suggest that Steve Clarke has made renewed efforts to persuade Barnes to commit to Scotland, reportedly promising him a place in the squad for the 2026 World Cup. McCoist views this as a logical move, highlighting Barnes' current form and proximity to Scotland. He argued that Barnes would be a valuable addition, enhancing Scotland's prospects without concern for potential player dissatisfaction.

McCoist dismissed any notion that Barnes might be using Scotland as a last resort, emphasizing the opportunity for him to represent the country on a global stage. He advised Barnes to consider the move seriously, suggesting that his chances of breaking into the England squad are slim compared to other established players like Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon. Barnes has been in excellent form for Newcastle this season, scoring 12 goals in 36 appearances.
