Matisse Thybulle, a former Washington Huskies standout and two-time Second Team All-Defense selection, has officially signed a one-year contract worth $3.3 million with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers are actively reshaping their team after LeBron James' departure in free agency. Thybulle was a key target for the team, reportedly discussing the opportunity with coach JJ Redick and player Luka Doncic.

Thybulle's NBA tenure, previously with the Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers, has been marked by his exceptional defensive capabilities. He has averaged 5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game over his career. Notably, in the 2025-26 season, he led the league in steals and deflections per 36 minutes among eligible players, shooting an impressive 41 percent from three-point range over the past two years.

Discussions between the Lakers and Trail Blazers regarding a potential sign-and-trade were explored to allow Thybulle a higher salary, but a deal could not be finalized. During his collegiate career at Washington, Thybulle set program records for steals, underscoring his defensive legacy.
