Summary
- Mathis Albert, USMNT sensation, to receive increased playtime.
- He debuted in the Bundesliga at 16, becoming the youngest American.
- Albert became USA's youngest goal scorer at 17.
Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovač has indicated that USMNT sensation Mathis Albert is poised for increased first-team involvement. Kovač stated that Albert "will get a lot more minutes" with the league leaders, likely "sooner" than expected.
Albert, who was born in South Carolina, made his Bundesliga debut in April of last year. At 16 years and 340 days old, he became the youngest American to play in Germany's top flight, surpassing Gio Reyna.
The 17-year-old forward, eligible to play for France and Germany, has featured in one senior match this term in the DFB Cup. He also made his international debut for the USA in the September-October window.
During his senior international debut, Albert became the USA's youngest-ever goal scorer with a strike against Chile on September 29th, aged 17 years and 131 days. Although this record was briefly surpassed, Kovač sees this as just one of many future milestones for Albert.
Kovač confirmed there are "no restrictions" on Albert's potential, calling him "a very talented young man" who is demonstrating "really good signs in training." The coach expects Albert to receive more game time at Dortmund than in the previous half-year. The next potential opportunity for Albert to play is today, in Dortmund's Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen.
