Marlins Ace Alcántara Sparks Trade Frenzy Ahead of Deadline
29 Jul
Summary
- Marlins' 2022 Cy Young winner Alcántara drawing trade interest
- Marlins weighing steep prospect price for Alcántara
- Alcántara making comeback after missing 2024 season due to injury

With the MLB trade deadline just days away, the Miami Marlins' star pitcher Sandy Alcántara has become a major focus of trade speculation. Alcántara, who won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, is drawing significant interest from multiple teams as the Marlins weigh their options.
Alcántara, a 29-year-old right-hander, began his career with the St. Louis Cardinals before being traded to the Marlins, where he has blossomed into one of the league's top pitchers. However, his 2024 season was derailed by Tommy John surgery, causing him to miss the entire year.
This season, Alcántara has been working his way back to form, though he has experienced some early-season struggles. As of Tuesday, he was 5-9 with a 6.66 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 104 innings. Despite these numbers, the Marlins believe Alcántara will eventually return to his previous standout form, and they are reportedly seeking a steep prospect package in exchange for the former Cy Young winner.
According to MLB insider Jim Bowden, the Marlins were initially leaning towards holding onto Alcántara past the July 31 trade deadline. However, Bowden later reported that the trade market for the pitcher has "picked up drastically," and there is now a "real chance he gets traded by Thursday." If the Marlins' high asking price is met, it seems Alcántara could be on the move in the coming days.
