Spears Reclassifies, Commits to Texas Basketball

Marcus Spears Jr., the top-ranked men's basketball recruit for the Class of 2027, has reclassified to the Class of 2026. He announced his commitment to the Texas Longhorns via social media. This means Spears will play for Texas this upcoming season, likely as a starter for a team projected to be in the preseason top five. Spears, who turned 17 in April, will need to complete two college seasons before he is eligible for the 2028 NBA Draft.

Texas's addition of Spears solidifies their position as a national championship contender. Coach Sean Miller's team was already a significant offseason winner, having added four top-100 transfers and two top-50 high school recruits. Spears, a 6-foot-9, 210-pound forward, adds size and depth to the frontcourt. He joins a growing trend of elite prospects entering college early to fulfill multi-season eligibility requirements before pursuing professional careers, similar to international signees Nikola Kusturica and Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje.
