Marathon History Made: Two-Hour Barrier Shattered!
26 Apr
Summary
- Sabastian Sawe officially broke the two-hour marathon barrier.
- Sawe's winning time set a new men's world record by 65 seconds.
- Eliud Kipchoge's previous sub-2-hour run was unofficial due to rule violations.

The two-hour barrier in marathon running has officially been broken for the first time. Kenya's Sabastian Sawe achieved this historic feat at the London Marathon on Sunday, finishing in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds. This victory also set a new men's world record, improving the previous mark by 65 seconds.
Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha also crossed the finish line under two hours in his debut marathon, clocking 1:59:41, while Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo secured third place with a time of 2:00:28, also faster than the prior world record.
This officially recognized achievement contrasts with Eliud Kipchoge's 2019 run, which, despite being under two hours, was not accepted as a world record due to specialized equipment and non-standard race conditions. Sawe's successful run in advanced footwear signifies a new benchmark in athletic performance.
