The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to sign defenseman Nick Blankenburg to a contract, according to sources. Blankenburg, who has been on a professional tryout, made a strong impression on the team during two preseason games. His addition will bring a mobile defenseman to the Maple Leafs' roster.
Blankenburg's path to Toronto included previous stints with the Nashville Predators and the Colorado Avalanche. He was acquired by the Avalanche in March for a 2027 fifth-round pick. Earlier this year, he played in 12 regular-season games and five postseason contests for the Avalanche.
His career highlights include making a significant impact in Nashville, where he recorded 11 points in 17 games. Blankenburg also showed resilience, drawing parallels to his experiences as a walk-on at the University of Michigan and with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Blankenburg's journey to the NHL was not straightforward. He played high school hockey in Michigan, then moved to the Alberta Junior Hockey League before earning a scholarship at the University of Michigan, where he was eventually named captain. He signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets after college before being traded to Nashville.
