Man Utd Medical Concerns Halt Ederson Transfer

Manchester United is contemplating canceling the agreed-upon £35 million transfer of midfielder Ederson from Atalanta, with concerns arising from his recent medical examinations. The initial medical was conducted in New York during the World Cup, and a second assessment is now required in England. There is a significant likelihood that the club might abandon the deal due to worries about Ederson's injury record. The 27-year-old box-to-box midfielder has made 180 appearances for Atalanta since 2022, scoring 16 goals, but missed ten games last season due to injuries.

This potential transfer setback comes as Manchester United, under the guidance of Michael Carrick, aims to secure two or three new midfielders this summer. The club is also nearing a £50 million agreement for Chelsea's Andrey Santos. If the Ederson deal collapses, United will need to intensify their search for midfield talent, having already missed out on targets like Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes.

Separately, Manchester United icon Nicky Butt has voiced his opinion that Sander Berge would have been a superior signing to Andrey Santos. Butt expressed skepticism about Santos's readiness for Manchester United, citing his limited starts for Chelsea last season. He highlighted Berge's impressive performances for Norway in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing him as a powerhouse midfielder with significant athleticism, though noting his less prominent showings at club level.
