Man Utd Coach Change Derails Serie A Transfer Plans
10 Feb
Summary
- Napoli neared a loan deal for Kobbie Mainoo in December.
- Zirkzee remains a summer option for Roma and other Serie A clubs.
- Michael Carrick's interim role boosted Mainoo's playtime at Man Utd.

Manchester United's decision to change coaches in January significantly impacted the transfer strategies of Italian clubs Roma and Napoli. Napoli had been on the verge of signing Kobbie Mainoo on loan in December, even reaching an agreement with his representatives. This move was intended as a loan without an option to buy. However, Manchester United ultimately did not approve the transfer.
With Mainoo remaining at Old Trafford and seeing increased playing time under interim coach Michael Carrick, the rumored move to Napoli appears unlikely. Concurrently, striker Joshua Zirkzee, who has experienced a minor injury and reduced role, remains an option for Roma and other Serie A clubs for the summer transfer window. Roma has since secured Donyell Malen, who has quickly proven to be an effective signing.
The timing of managerial changes proved critical. While Napoli's formula for acquiring Mainoo might not have been ideal, securing him could have provided future benefits. The club, despite facing injuries like Anguissa's, should have strengthened their midfield. Roma, conversely, made a shrewder move by signing Malen, who has demonstrated superior goal-scoring ability compared to Zirkzee.
