Malik Willis: Superstar Potential or Backup? Analyst Debate Heats Up

Malik Willis, the Green Bay Packers' backup quarterback, is drawing considerable attention as he approaches free agency this offseason. After two seasons as a backup to Jordan Love, Willis impressed during limited game time in the 2025 season, sparking interest from multiple teams.

Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms lauded Willis on the "Dan Patrick Show," calling him a "superstar" and the "crowning gem" among available free agents. Simms noted Willis possesses "special talent," a "special arm," and "special mobility," effectively running an offense.

Simms even suggested Willis's potential might exceed that of Jordan Love, though he acknowledged needing to see more before declaring him better. Willis was originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2022 and traded to Green Bay in August 2024.

Reports have linked the Cleveland Browns to Willis, but insider Tony Grossi refuted these claims, citing the team's significant cap space issues with Deshaun Watson. Willis's 2025 performance for the Packers included completing 85.7% of his passes for 422 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, alongside 123 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. The Miami Dolphins have also reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Willis during the offseason.
