Running back Makhi Hughes has been added to the prestigious Doak Walker Award watch list, an honor recognizing the nation's top running backs. Hughes brings a remarkable collegiate track record to the Houston Cougars.
During his time at Tulane, Hughes amassed 2,849 career rushing yards, positioning him as the second most prolific among active FBS running backs. His notable achievements include two First Team All-AAC selections and being named the 2024 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year. Hughes was instrumental in leading Tulane to two conference championship games.
The transfer's arrival in Houston is significant, filling a crucial void left by departed players. He reunites with head coach Willie Fritz, who previously coached him at Tulane, and offensive coordinator Slade Nagle. This familiarity offers a distinct advantage, potentially accelerating his integration and development with the Cougars. The team's strong offensive line also bodes well for Hughes' potential to achieve another 1,000-yard rushing season.
