Makhachev Mocks Garry's Wrestling Camp
19 Feb
Summary
- Makhachev believes short training camps are counterproductive.
- He states wrestling cannot be learned in a few months.
- Garry is not considered a big enough name for a title fight.

Islam Makhachev has publicly commented on Ian Machado Garry's recent training trip to Georgia, where the Irish welterweight aimed to enhance his wrestling skills. Makhachev believes that short-term training camps, like the few months Garry might spend there, are a "cruel mistake" and ultimately detrimental to a fighter's belief in their abilities.
Makhachev emphasized that mastering wrestling requires dedication from a young age, stating, "In two-three months, it is impossible to learn how to wrestle." He also offered his opinion on Garry compared to former champion Jack Della Maddalena, ranking Maddalena higher despite both being primarily strikers.
Adding to the skepticism, Makhachev's manager, Ali Abdelaziz, has downplayed Garry's chances of securing a welterweight title fight. Abdelaziz argued that Garry is not a significant draw and does not possess the marketability to headline major events. He suggested that Kamaru Usman, with his proven record and recent win, presents a more compelling challenge for Makhachev.
