10 Jul
Summary
- Claude Makelele's defensive midfield role was crucial for early 21st-century Real Madrid.
- His departure led to a three-year trophy drought for the club.
- Makelele advises Real Madrid to sign a ball-carrying midfielder alongside Tchouameni.
Claude Makelele's understated yet vital role as a defensive midfielder significantly impacted Real Madrid's success in the early 2000s. While star forwards grabbed headlines, Makelele's work breaking up play and covering ground was essential for team stability. The club experienced a subsequent three-year period without trophies following his transfer.
Now a respected voice in European football, Makelele has commented on Real Madrid's current midfield dynamics. He supports the contract renewal of his compatriot Aurelien Tchouameni, viewing him as a successor. However, Makelele also identifies a critical need for a different type of midfielder—one who can carry the ball and advance play effectively to the attacking players.
This advice comes as Jose Mourinho also reportedly seeks a midfielder for the team. Makelele's insights suggest that securing a player who can consistently transition the ball forward is paramount to overcoming a significant weakness in Real Madrid's squad.
