Magda Linette: Beyond the Tennis Grind

Magda Linette, a 34-year-old Polish tennis player, is reshaping perceptions of career longevity in the sport. She emphasizes that players in their 30s are not redefining a new peak but are building on foundations laid by earlier stars like Serena and Venus Williams, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. Linette is actively promoting the WTA's new maternity fund, launched in March 2025 with funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. This initiative offers eligible players paid maternity leave and fertility treatment grants, aiming to allow them to balance family and career without sacrificing their professional aspirations.

Beyond career milestones, Linette shed light on the less-seen aspects of life on the WTA Tour. She described the constant travel, logistics, and personal management required, noting that these demands often consume more energy and time than the tennis matches themselves. This season has been particularly challenging for Linette, who experienced a slump with several early exits after reaching the semifinals in Libema. Despite a 21-23 win-loss record coming into Chennai, she has shown resilience, securing notable wins against Iga Swiatek and reaching the third round of Grand Slams.

Linette's journey is supported by former world No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska, who now serves as a consultant for approximately 10-12 weeks a year, primarily during major tournaments. Linette, currently ranked No. 68, aims to regain her form and past success, drawing inspiration from positive memories of the Chennai Open, where she was a finalist in 2022. She is set to face Japan's Mai Hontama in the quarterfinals, a match that presents an opportunity to capitalize on her renewed confidence and fighting spirit.
