3 May
Summary
- Mac Speake, 84, completed his final London Marathon after 45 consecutive races.
- He was part of the 'Ever Presents' club, running every race since 1981.
- Speake withdrew from this year's race due to pain after 7 miles.

At 84 years old, Mac Speake has ended his record-setting streak in the London Marathon. He was a member of the exclusive 'Ever Presents,' having completed every race since the event began in 1981. This year marked his 45th consecutive participation, a journey he described as a huge part of his life.
However, the 2026 marathon proved to be a step too far. Speake, a retired GP from Suffolk, withdrew from the race after seven miles due to severe pain, which he suspects is a stress fracture. He was forced to take a taxi off the course, a difficult decision after dedicating almost half of his life to the event.
Speake's final marathon was a stark contrast to his earlier glory days, when he finished in under three hours, with a personal best of two hours and 44 minutes in 1983. His wife, Ros, and daughter had to assist him across the finish line in the previous year's race, which he completed in nine hours and 14 minutes. Despite his personal disappointment, Speake holds cherished memories of his marathon career, noting his 45 completions as a significant life achievement.
The 'Ever Presents' club, initially comprising 42 runners who completed the first 15 marathons, has dwindled. One member died, another was injured, and some chose not to start or finish due to health concerns. Chris Finill, 67, known as the 'baby' of the group, lauded Speake as a "steadfast and central member." Speake's achievement of completing 45 editions is celebrated by London Marathon Events CEO Hugh Brasher as truly extraordinary.
