8.21m Leap: An Athlete's Tribute to Mom

Lokesh Sathyanathan recently achieved an extraordinary 8.21m in the long jump, shattering his own indoor national record of 8.01m. This monumental leap made him only the fourth Indian athlete ever to secure an NCAA Division I title, pushing him to third on the all-time Indian long jump list.

His victory was not easily won. Sathyanathan moved to the USA in 2022, pursuing a dream already tested by a severe accident in Bengaluru that caused major facial injuries. A subsequent freak gym accident in Louisville fractured his big toe, necessitating two surgeries and rehabilitation supported by Reliance Foundation.

Transferred to Tarleton State University, Sathyanathan trained under jumps specialist Bobby Carter, whom he considers a close friend. This period of high-performance training was crucial, alongside the enduring belief of his family.

Tragically, his mother passed away before his success, leaving a void. He recalls her last words as a strong expectation for him to excel. He often relates to a film scene where the protagonist honors his mother's dreams, finding inspiration in that connection.

Sathyanathan also draws immense strength from his father, who, despite his own unrealized athletic aspirations and personal losses, continues to support Lokesh. His father's resilience, even after losing his wife and mother within months, inspires Lokesh.

He openly discusses his own mental health struggles, including anxiety, stemming from his injuries. His mother's encouragement to "dream big" and his father's continued belief have been pivotal. He now works with a sports psychologist, treating mental conditioning with the same seriousness as physical training.

For Sathyanathan, jumping is his identity and purpose. The 8.21m mark represents more than a record; it signifies fulfilling his mother's deepest wish. His father watched from India, shedding happy tears, as his son achieved this significant milestone.
