Lions TE Battle Heats Up: Conklin vs. Wright for Backup Role
6 Jul
Summary
- Sam LaPorta is the undisputed starting tight end.
- Tyler Conklin and Brock Wright compete for the backup role.
- Undrafted rookie Jackson Meeks is converting to tight end.
Sam LaPorta has solidified his position as the Detroit Lions' undisputed starting tight end. Entering the 2026 season, LaPorta has amassed an impressive career stat line of 186 receptions, 2,104 yards, and 20 touchdowns through his first three NFL seasons.
The primary focus for the Lions' tight end room now shifts to the battle for the backup role. Brock Wright, who has held the position in recent years, faces significant competition from offseason signing Tyler Conklin. Wright recorded 14 catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns last season, while Conklin had seven catches for 101 yards with the L.A. Chargers.
Conklin, a local Michigan product, signed a one-year deal with the Lions. Despite being a capable pass-catcher, his age (31) and past healthy scratches raise some questions. However, he provides a valuable safety net should Pro Bowler LaPorta, who suffered a season-ending back injury in Week 10 of last season, face further injury.
Further complicating the depth chart is second-year player Jackson Meeks. Originally a wide receiver, Meeks is converting to tight end and has been taking reps at the position during team activities. Meeks spent most of last season on the practice squad and will need a strong training camp performance to secure a spot on the 53-man roster, competing alongside Conklin and Wright.
Rounding out the tight end competition are Miles Kitselman, Zach Horton, and Thomas Gordon. Undrafted rookie Miles Kitselman, out of Tennessee, is seen as having the best chance among this group to potentially make the practice squad.
