Vonn Details Gruesome Tibia Fracture and Harrowing Hospital Stay
23 Feb
Summary
- Severe tibia and fibula fractures complicated by life-threatening compartment syndrome.
- Hospital stay extended due to low hemoglobin and a necessary blood transfusion.
- Future surgery planned to address ACL and potentially remove internal hardware.

Lindsey Vonn recently detailed the severe nature of her injuries, including a complex tibia fracture, a fractured fibula head, and compartment syndrome, which she described as nearly fatal. She explained that compartment syndrome occurs when excessive blood flow in a traumatized area crushes muscles and nerves.
Vonn's hospital stay extended to nearly two weeks due to significant blood loss from surgeries, leading to dangerously low hemoglobin levels. She required a blood transfusion to stabilize her condition before being discharged to a hotel. She is currently using a wheelchair due to immobility from these injuries and a broken right ankle.
The recovery journey is expected to be long, with Vonn anticipating approximately one year for all bones to heal. She also mentioned potential future surgeries to address her ACL and possibly remove internal fixation hardware. Her immediate focus is rehabilitation, with plans to progress from a wheelchair to crutches within a few weeks.
