Lewis Cine, a former star safety for the Georgia Bulldogs, will not be playing in the United Football League after being released by the DC Defenders. Cine's professional journey has faced significant challenges since his collegiate success. Drafted 32nd overall by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2022 NFL Draft, his career was immediately impacted by a compound fracture in his lower left leg during his rookie season.
This severe injury proved to be a major setback, with former NBA player Paul George noting similar injuries can permanently affect an athlete's performance. Cine's time with the Vikings was brief, recording only one tackle over two seasons. He later spent time on the Buffalo Bills' practice squad and was briefly with the Philadelphia Eagles, with whom he won Super Bowl LIX, before being waived/injured.
Cine's departure from the DC Defenders marks another chapter in his attempt to revive his professional football career following his promising college days at Georgia, where he was a first-team All-SEC selection and Defensive MVP of the 2021 national championship game.
