Kiffin pointed to comments he made to Vanity Fair regarding Ole Miss's history with race relations as a significant recruiting hurdle.

According to Kiffin, potential recruits' grandparents sometimes objected to moving to Oxford, Mississippi, a concern that did not arise when discussing Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He recalled parents expressing that LSU's campus diversity felt welcoming, unlike what they perceived at Ole Miss. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey addressed the matter, emphasizing leadership expectations for conduct and commentary among coaches within the league. Sankey declined to confirm if Kiffin would face fines for his statements.
