Lakers' Trade Rumors Swirl: Reaves for Young Star?

High expectations surround the Los Angeles Lakers, especially following their offseason moves. If the team underperforms by January, significant trade rumors are anticipated, potentially involving prominent players like Austin Reaves. Reaves, recently signed to a long-term deal, is expected to partner with Luka Doncic. Should the Lakers fail to meet performance standards, Reaves might be subject to trade talks, while Doncic's future with the team remains secure.

A proposed trade scenario involves swapping Austin Reaves for Houston Rockets' young talent, Amen Thompson. This idea was discussed on a podcast, with insights suggesting the Lakers' high valuation of Reaves, evidenced by their refusal to trade him for Kyrie Irving previously. The bar for trading Reaves is set very high.

Amen Thompson offers distinct advantages, including ball-handling and passing skills, alongside strong defense, athleticism, and rebounding. While not Reaves's equal in all aspects, Thompson presents a valuable skillset. The Lakers are understood to only consider trading Reaves for a star player of equivalent value or better fit alongside Doncic. Any potential deal would likely involve Reaves plus draft capital for a singular, superior player, not multiple assets.

It remains questionable whether the Rockets would trade Amen Thompson, who recently signed a five-year, $208 million rookie-max extension, for Reaves. Despite Reaves's current strong performance, Thompson's considerable upside makes him a highly coveted asset.
