Lakers Superstar Doncic Locked Up, Reaves Bets on Himself
17 Aug
Summary
- Lakers sign Doncic to 3-year, $165M extension
- Reaves declines 4-year, $89.2M extension, becomes free agent
- Reaves wants to be "Laker for life" despite massive payday looming

As the 2025-26 NBA season approaches, the Los Angeles Lakers have made significant moves to bolster their roster and secure their long-term future. The team's biggest priority this offseason was locking up their superstar guard Luka Doncic, who signed a 3-year, $165 million contract extension earlier this month. This ensures that Doncic will remain a Laker for the foreseeable future, solidifying the team's championship aspirations.
However, the Lakers faced a crucial decision regarding another key player, Austin Reaves. The 27-year-old guard, who went undrafted in 2021 but has since emerged as a top-30 player in the league, declined a 4-year, $89.2 million contract extension with the team. This means Reaves will become an unrestricted free agent next summer, taking a significant gamble on himself.
Despite the uncertainty, reports indicate that Reaves wants to spend the rest of his career in Los Angeles. "People around the league are penciling him in to make $30-plus million this summer, whether it's with the Lakers or someone else," said Lakers insider Jovan Buha. "I expect it to be with the Lakers. I expect him to re-sign on a multiyear deal. He wants to be a Laker for life."

The Lakers' offseason moves have positioned them as a formidable contender for the 2025-26 season and beyond. With Doncic and LeBron James leading the way, and Reaves potentially cementing his status as a top-tier player, the Lakers are poised to make a strong push for their first championship since 2020.
