Kyrie Irving Shut Down for Season
2 Mar
Summary
- Kyrie Irving will not play this season to recover from ACL surgery.
- The Mavericks are prioritizing their 2026 first-round pick this year.
- The team believes a future tandem of Irving and Cooper Flagg could be formidable.

Dallas Mavericks star guard Kyrie Irving has officially been shut down for the remainder of the current season as he rehabilitates from ACL surgery. The decision, confirmed by Co-Interim General Manager Matt Riccardi, prioritizes Irving's complete physical, mental, and emotional recovery.
Riccardi stated that the long-term goal is to have Irving fully healthy, alongside promising prospects like Cooper Flagg and other key players. The Mavericks currently hold a 21-39 record, indicating a focus on future team building rather than immediate postseason contention.
The team anticipates a formidable future with a healthy Irving paired with Cooper Flagg, supported by other developing players. However, this outlook relies on several players remaining healthy, a concern given past performance.
By the time Irving returns next season, he will be 34 years old and will not have played for approximately 18 months following his knee injury. While his past performance suggests he can overcome such challenges, a slight decline is expected, prompting interest in younger guards.
