Knights Pursue Storm Playmaker Pezet in $900K Bid

Summary
- Knights desperate for a halfback, eyeing Jonah Pezet
- Pezet's pathway to Storm No.7 jersey blocked by Jahrome Hughes' extension
- Pezet could fetch up to $900,000 per season if he moves

According to NRL legend Andrew Johns, the Newcastle Knights are set to make a serious play for Melbourne Storm's young halfback Jonah Pezet. The 22-year-old playmaker is now free to explore his options after Jahrome Hughes' contract extension with the Storm effectively blocked Pezet's pathway to the No.7 jersey.
With Pezet's future at the Storm uncertain, speculation is mounting that he could fetch up to $900,000 per season if he chooses to move clubs. Johns believes the Knights, who are desperate for a long-term halfback, should be first in line to secure Pezet's services.
"The Knights are desperate for a halfback, so I'm sure they'll be interested in talking to Jonah," Johns said on Wide World of Sports' Immortal Behaviour. "There's not many halfbacks around, so he could pick his club really."

Pezet had previously turned down an offer from the Knights to stay in Melbourne, but the release clause linked to Hughes' future has now been triggered. With Jackson Hastings on his way out of the Knights and no clear successor in place, the timing may suit both parties.
"... he's done his apprenticeship, he's been in the lower grades and had a couple of knee injuries that have kept him out, but he's 22 now, so he's ready to go. He can't wait in reserve grade for another two or three years," Johns added.
The Dragons have also emerged as potential suitors for Pezet, though their crowded halves stocks and recent recruitment shake-up may complicate matters. Johns warned that securing a playmaker of Pezet's calibre won't come cheap, with the Knights or Dragons likely to have to pay around $800,000 to $900,000 per season to lure him away from the Storm.
