Kleber Emerges as Surprise Backup Center Option for Lakers
5 Aug
Summary
- Lakers sign Deandre Ayton as starting center
- Lakers also add Marcus Smart and Jake LaRavia
- Maxi Kleber could be a solid backup center option

As of August 5th, 2025, the Los Angeles Lakers have made significant improvements to their roster compared to last season's disappointing first-round playoff exit. The team has addressed its need for a dominant center by signing Deandre Ayton, a 26-year-old who has averaged 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game over his career.
The Lakers have also brought in veteran guard Marcus Smart, the 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, as well as forward Jake LaRavia, an excellent 3-point shooter with defensive potential. However, some fans are concerned about the team's lack of depth at the center position behind Ayton.
One player who could emerge as a solid backup option is Maxi Kleber. Kleber was previously considered a throw-in piece in the Luka Doncic trade, but he has a history of being a dependable 3-point shooter and serviceable defender. Prior to the 2024-25 season, Kleber shot 36.2% from beyond the arc and averaged 7.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game.
While Kleber is not a dominant rim protector or rebounder, he could provide adequate minutes as a backup center, potentially outperforming the Lakers' current backup, Jaxson Hayes. Kleber's chemistry with Doncic from their time together on the Dallas Mavericks could also be an asset for the Lakers.
The key question is whether the 33-year-old Kleber can regain his previous form after recovering from a foot injury. If he can, the Lakers may opt to keep him on the roster rather than explore trade options, as he could be a valuable piece in their quest to bounce back from last season's disappointment.
