25 Apr
Summary
- Churchill Downs and LG&E/KU extend green energy partnership.
- Renewable power will offset energy use during Derby Week.
- This marks the fourth consecutive year of the partnership.

Churchill Downs Racetrack is continuing its commitment to sustainability by powering the 152nd Kentucky Derby and associated events with renewable energy for the fourth consecutive year. The historic venue has extended its Green Energy partnership with local utilities, Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company.
This collaboration ensures that the energy consumed during the entirety of Kentucky Derby Week will be offset by renewable power. The utilities will secure Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from solar and wind facilities located in Kentucky and surrounding states on behalf of Churchill Downs.
This green initiative supports regional clean-energy development while enabling Churchill Downs to reduce its environmental footprint. The partnership aligns with the racetrack's broader, long-term sustainability strategy and commitment to hosting major events responsibly.
The 152nd Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026, following a week of festivities that include Opening Day powered by LG&E and KU on April 25, 2026. The event is anticipated to generate over $400 million in economic impact for the Louisville community.
