Karate Coach Sacrifices Title for Juniors

Akino Lindsay, a seasoned competitor, demonstrated profound dedication by sacrificing his heavyweight clash-sparring title match at the recent International Sport Karate Association United States Open in Orlando, Florida. His decision stemmed from a commitment to coaching the younger members of the Jamaican contingent. This year's team, comprising only nine athletes due to visa challenges, returned with a commendable haul of 13 medals, including five gold.

Lindsay expressed immense pride in the team's performance, noting that a larger squad of over 20 fighters was initially anticipated. He revealed plans to expedite next year's local qualifying tournament, moving it earlier in the year. This strategic adjustment aims to allow ample time for visa applications and processing, ensuring that qualifiers who missed this year's event due to circumstances beyond their control will be automatic entrants next year. He anticipates a significantly larger team and a greater medal count in the upcoming year.

Among the notable junior medalists was Adrian Moore, who clinched the Night of Victory International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) World Championship title. Trey Pennant secured gold in clash and continuous sparring, while Akhaylah Gilzene earned gold and silver. Other medalists included Arianna Brown, Manuel Rosales, and Lamar Henry, contributing to the juniors' impressive tally of three gold, four silver, and five bronze medals. Sadeki Harris and Shervia Perkins also added silver and bronze medals to Jamaica's total.
