Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, a notable first-round NFL selection from the 2021 draft, has unexpectedly announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 27. His decision came shortly after signing a one-year free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in March.
The Eagles officially placed Tryon-Shoyinka on their reserve/retired list this past Tuesday. Prior to joining Philadelphia, he spent his first four seasons (2021-2024) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he recorded 45 starts in 66 games.
In the 2025 season, Tryon-Shoyinka played for both the Cleveland Browns and the Chicago Bears. His career totals stand at 160 tackles, 15 sacks, 37 quarterback hits, and two forced fumbles over 82 games.
Philadelphia has since signed AJ Epenesa, a 27-year-old second-round pick from the 2020 draft, to fill the vacant roster spot. Epenesa, who previously played for the Buffalo Bills, brings a solid record of 135 tackles and 24 sacks.
