Jockey's Suspension Doubled After Racing Spill
6 Jun
Summary
- Jockey Ramon Vazquez's suspension increased from 7 to 30 days.
- A riding violation caused a multi-horse incident, injuring two jockeys.
- The executive director cited the severity and resulting harm as reasons.

Jockey Ramon Vazquez's suspension has been significantly extended from seven to 30 days by the Texas Racing Commission's executive director. The decision, dated June 5, stems from a severe riding violation that occurred during a race at Lone Star Park on May 24.
Vazquez's mount, Bint Al Dandy, veered outward in the stretch, leading to a chain reaction. Three horses and their riders fell, resulting in serious injuries to jockeys Isaiah Wiseman and Ernesto Valdez-Jimenez. Wiseman suffered spinal fractures and a concussion, while Valdez-Jimenez required knee surgery.
Executive director David Holmes stated the initial seven-day suspension was insufficient given the incident's severity and the substantial risk and harm caused. He emphasized that Vazquez's actions disregarded normal riding safety, creating extreme danger. The modified 30-day suspension is deemed proportionate to the violation's seriousness and the actual harm incurred.
While Vazquez initially waived his right to a formal hearing, he can appeal the modified ruling. He previously stated on social media that his filly was spooked, attributing the incident to external factors rather than negligence.
