Jil Teichmann, currently ranked WTA No. 168, has advanced to the quarterfinals at the WTA 250 tournament in Guangzhou. The Swiss player achieved this by defeating the sixth-seeded Turkish player, Zeynep Sönmez (WTA 64), in a second-round match.
Teichmann lost the first set 4-6 but rallied to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-1. The match lasted just under two hours, concluding with Teichmann converting her first match point. This victory gives her a 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Sönmez.
Her next opponent will be either Anna Bondár of Hungary or Kaitlin Quevedo of Spain. This is only Teichmann's second WTA quarterfinal appearance this year; she previously reached the semifinals in Rabat in May. She recently returned to competition following a leg injury.
