Jets Rebuild Hopes Hinge on Fields' Resurgence
3 Aug
Summary
- Jets fired coach Saleh, GM Douglas in 2023
- Journeyman QB Fields takes over from Rodgers
- Defense key to Jets' 2025 playoff push

As of August 4th, 2025, the New York Jets are in the midst of a major rebuild following a disappointing 2023 campaign. Last year, the team parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas after a 2-3 start and a 3-8 record by mid-November, respectively.
Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich was unable to turn things around, leading the Jets to a 3-9 finish with Aaron Rodgers under center. However, Rodgers has since departed for the Pittsburgh Steelers, leaving the Jets to start over with former first-round pick Justin Fields at quarterback.
The Jets' defense, now led by new head coach Aaron Glenn, is expected to be the team's foundation for a potential turnaround in 2025. If Glenn can restore the unit's competitiveness, it could provide a platform for the offense to succeed, despite the uncertainty surrounding Fields' development as a passer.
While the Jets are considered a long shot to make the playoffs this season, their division rivals, the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots, are also in various stages of transition. This could open the door for the Jets to potentially surprise and secure a postseason berth, though they will need significant improvements from Fields and the rest of the roster to do so.
