Pegula: Coaches wanted fake energy, I stayed true

Tennis world No. 6, Jessica Pegula, recently shared insights into her coaching experiences. During her teenage years, several coaches and her parents expressed dissatisfaction with her seemingly detached on-court attitude, suggesting she needed to be more animated. Pegula found this pressure to alter her personality created internal conflict, making her question her own identity.

However, Pegula's perspective has shifted significantly. She now receives numerous compliments for her calm and collected presence, a trait that was once seen as a weakness. This shift in perception allowed her to embrace her natural demeanor without pretense, ultimately finding it a more effective and energizing approach.

Reflecting on this journey, Pegula posted a message on X advocating for self-trust and authenticity, stating, "Always stay true to yourself." Her consistent respectful conduct on and off the court has been widely recognized, leading to her being honored with the Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award at a recent WTA ceremony.
