Javelin Star's Olympic Dreams Sidetracked by Damaged Gear

Rumesh Tharanga, the world's number one ranked javelin thrower, has experienced a significant equipment issue after his javelins were damaged during air transit. The 23-year-old athlete secured a gold medal at the World Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Upon returning to Sri Lanka, he discovered multiple javelins, including five confirmed by the sports minister, were snapped.

The Sri Lankan government has announced its full support, with Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage confirming that the state will fund the replacement of the damaged equipment. This commitment underscores Tharanga's importance as a national athletic star and a prominent hope for Sri Lanka's first Olympic gold medal, targeted for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

Tharanga's achievements this year include victories at the Commonwealth Games and Diamond League, in addition to his recent World Ultimate Championship title. He holds the Sri Lankan national record with a personal best throw of 92.62m, achieved in June 2026, which is the furthest throw globally this year. He is also set to compete in the Asian Games starting September 26, 2026.

With the 2028 Olympics in his sights, Tharanga aims to break the world record and secure a medal for Sri Lanka, which has historically won two silver medals in the sport. He expressed his determination to bring home a medal that Sri Lanka has never achieved before.
