Brissett Holdout: Analyst Defends QB's Pay Demands

Anthony Reinhard, a popular NFL Substack author, has become a rare defender of Jacoby Brissett's contract holdout. While many analysts express confusion over Brissett's demands, given the Cardinals' 1-11 record in his starts last season, Reinhard posits that Brissett's request is reasonable. He likens it to any employee seeking appropriate compensation when promoted without a pay adjustment.

Reinhard explains that 'bridge' quarterbacks, a category Brissett falls into as a stopgap, typically earn between $9 million and $16 million annually. Brissett's current contract, however, places him closer to backup quarterback pay. Reinhard suggests a fair resolution could involve guaranteeing his bonuses and adding a few million dollars to his current salary.

Furthermore, Reinhard contends that the Cardinals' general manager, Monti Ossenfort, who has a 15-36 record over three seasons, has an incentive to secure a deal. Ossenfort needs to show upward momentum for the team, which is easier with a capable quarterback like Brissett, whom Reinhard believes is the best option currently available.

The ongoing holdout means Brissett is missing crucial team activities and offensive installations under new head coach Mike LaFleur. Reinhard predicts that a resolution is likely by early July, as missed training camp reps would significantly impact the team's preparation.
