The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has announced the creation of the ITTF Doubles World Cup, a new global tournament set to commence in 2027. This event has been approved by the ITTF Executive Board and will encompass men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles competitions.
This initiative directly supports the LA28 Olympic Games, where doubles events will be featured for the first time since Athens 2004. The ITTF Doubles World Cup aims to become the premier competition for doubles specialists, enhancing their Olympic qualification pathway. Petra Sörling, ITTF President, highlighted the significance of this launch during the federation's centenary year.
Recent results demonstrate the growing importance of doubles play. Chinese pairs secured mixed and women's doubles titles at the 2025 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals, while Japanese athletes won the men's doubles. In 2026, French brothers Alexis and Félix Lebrun achieved a Grand Smash men's doubles title, and a Brazilian mixed doubles pair made history.
