Italy Eyes Second F1 Race Amidst Middle East Uncertainty

Italy is making preparations to potentially host a second Formula 1 Grand Prix during the current 2026 season. Geronimo La Russa, president of the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI), revealed that discussions are underway with government and sporting bodies to ready the country for this possibility. Imola has been identified as the most suitable circuit to stage this potential additional race.

This initiative stems from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has created significant uncertainty regarding the scheduled end of the Formula 1 season. The races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, slated as the penultimate and final rounds respectively, are now in question. The Bahrain Grand Prix, originally cancelled, is set to be rescheduled in Malaysia.

Guenther Steiner, former Haas team principal, has raised concerns about the feasibility of a European finale late in the season, citing unpredictable weather in November and December and the logistical and financial implications for teams. The inclusion of Malaysia as a flexible option aims to ensure more than 20 races still take place.
