The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) is currently investigating racist abuse aimed at debutant second-row player Edwin Edogbo. This abuse surfaced on social media platforms following Edogbo's first international match, a 20-13 victory for Ireland against Italy in Dublin. Posts celebrating the young player's debut on the IRFU's X and Instagram accounts were unfortunately met with several racist comments.
The IRFU has acknowledged the online abuse and stated they are collaborating with Signify, a data technology company, and relevant authorities to report and address these incidents. The union emphasized its unwavering zero-tolerance policy towards any form of racism, declaring that such behavior has no place in Irish society. Investigations are actively proceeding to tackle the cowardly actions of a small minority.
Edogbo, born and raised in County Cork to Nigerian parents, played the final ten minutes of the match. He received a warm reception from the Aviva Stadium crowd before contributing to his team's hard-fought win. Ireland's next Six Nations match is scheduled against England at Twickenham.
