2 Mar
Summary
- Iqaluit skiers face sticky, dry conditions due to lack of snow.
- Team Nunavut trains indoors with SkiErg and rollerblading for AWG.
- Athletes competed in Quebec's Gatineau Loppet for crucial practice.
Young cross-country skiers from Iqaluit are facing significant challenges preparing for the Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse due to a notable lack of snow and extremely dry, cold conditions. These conditions have made outdoor training difficult, with athletes describing their skis as "sticky" and lacking glide.
Despite the difficult outdoor environment, Team Nunavut is employing innovative training methods. Coach Benoit Havard has been grooming a limited trail, while athletes like Callum Goddard and Igimaq Williamson Bathory supplement their training with indoor activities. These include using a SkiErg machine, which simulates skiing and builds strength, and rollerblade skiing during warmer months.
To gain essential race experience, the team recently traveled to Quebec for the Gatineau Loppet. This event provided crucial practice time and allowed the skiers to "get lots of skis in their legs" before the Arctic Winter Games. Callum Goddard and Igimaq Williamson Bathory achieved second and third place finishes in some of their races during the Gatineau Loppet, boosting their confidence for the upcoming competition.
