IPL Star's Injury Claim Questioned Over T20 Blast Play
30 May
Summary
- Coach questions player's injury withdrawal after seeing him play T20s.
- Player cited a groin injury that was progressively worsening.
- BCCI policy on player withdrawals after auctions is praised.

Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara has voiced concern over all-rounder Sam Curran's withdrawal from the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a supposed groin injury. Sangakkara expressed his disappointment after witnessing Curran actively participating for Surrey in the T20 Blast competition, which seemed contradictory to the season-ending injury claim.
Curran, who was expected to be a key player for the Royals after being traded from Chennai Super Kings, pulled out of the IPL following the T20 World Cup. The team subsequently replaced him with Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka. Sangakkara noted that while genuine season-ending injuries are understood, seeing Curran play for Surrey was disheartening.
Curran himself had previously mentioned a progressively worsening injury that required scans, leading to his decision to miss the IPL and focus on rehabilitation. He acknowledged the disappointment of not participating in the tournament and the difficulty of watching from the sidelines.
Sangakkara also took the opportunity to commend the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) stringent policies concerning players who withdraw after being selected in the IPL auction. He stressed the importance of contractual obligations being met legitimately, noting that such strictness benefits all IPL franchises.
