IPL 2026 Schedule Delayed by Elections
3 Mar
Summary
- BCCI delayed IPL 2026 schedule due to assembly elections.
- Franchises face uncertainty in planning logistics and security.
- Venues like Bengaluru and Jaipur recently received hosting clearances.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has temporarily halted the release of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 schedule. This pause is directly attributed to the ongoing assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu. Clarity on polling dates is now a prerequisite for the fixture announcement.
This uncertainty significantly impacts IPL franchises, whose logistical planning, including travel and security, is left in limbo. Despite the delay, teams have initiated internal groundwork, drawing on past experiences with election-related schedule disruptions. Preparations are expected to intensify on a 'war-footing' once the schedule is released, with the tournament proposed to commence around March 28.
Adding to the complexity, venue clearances have also contributed to the holdup. Recently, Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured permission to host seven home games across Bengaluru and Raipur. Similarly, Rajasthan Royals received the green light for five matches in Jaipur after a prolonged period of venue uncertainty.
The IPL has a history of navigating election-related challenges. In 2024, the BCCI initially released only the first two weeks of fixtures, adjusting the remainder post-polling. The tournament has successfully been staged entirely within India during previous election years, including 2019, despite general elections overlapping with the playing dates.
In 2014, the IPL was split into two legs, with an initial phase held in the United Arab Emirates due to a nine-phase general election in India. The league was entirely moved to South Africa in 2009, the only instance of it being staged overseas because of elections.
